Little Boy
The little boy keeps asking me the questions I don’t know
He doesn’t realize I make it up as I go
I can see the expectations as you look into my eyes
He thinks I’m sure to have the answers, if I just try
I wish that I could tell you all the things you need to know
About love and loss, and fables, that just aren’t so
How to walk and talk and scheme and pretend just like a man
And all the things you shouldn’t do, but will do, because you can
But one thing that I know
As I watch you grow
The lessons that you learn

I can show you how to run and jump and ride a pony too
I’m afraid that I can’t teach you all the things I never knew
Your time as a little boy will quickly pass me by
I’ll miss it as you run outside, forgetting to say good-bye
How can I protect you from the pain of a broken heart
With all my time and years, I couldn’t show you where to start
But with your lovely face and sweet bye-and-bye
I know you’ll find the very one to stand by your side
